Before Betfair: Bayern Munich V Man Utd 1999

Since Betfair was invented in 2001 this means we can only imagine how some of the historic betting events would have played out if they had been in-play. This is a light hearted look at how we feel the markets would have reacted to some of the great sporting events that happened before Betfair was invented. The prices are based on similar matches that have happened since. This is just a bit of fun but we are sure you will enjoy reminiscing…

 Bayern Munich V Manchester United,1999

With Manchester United on the verge of a historic treble but with Bayern such a formidable opponent the markets were finding it hard to seperate the two before kick off.

The Match Odds markets had Man Utd priced @ 2.80, Bayern @ 2.80 and the draw @ 3.25 before this match. The outright winners market had both sides around the 2 mark which made this final a relative coin flip in the eyes of the bookmakers.

We did not have to wait too long for the opening goal as Bayern Munich took the lead in just the 7th minute with a free kick that was beautifully curled in by Mario Basler. The match odds price on Bayern plunged down to 1.60 but after that Manchester United began to dominate possession without creating too many chances.

The major drama of the match was saved for the late stages. Teddy Sheringham equalising for Manchester United in the 90th minute after Bayern Munich had traded as low as 1.10 to win the trophy.

When the markets came back from suspension The Draw price in the match odds market was trading around 1.06 as it seemed we were now destined for Extra Time.

However the drama was not over yet. With just 1 minute of injury time remaining, Manchester United forced another corner and this was met with a flick by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who won the trophy with what was virtually the last kick of the match.

The in-play traders were stunned as Man United had traded as high as 100 to win the match going into injury time and as high as 30 in the overall winners market.

3 minutes is a long time in football and it was just 3 minutes later that United went trading from 100 into 1.01 and Bayern were out to 1000 in the Champions League Winners market 1999 in one of the most remarkable ends to a Champions League final ever witnessed.

Incredible stuff!

  1. Hi Ben, great post as per usual! Keep up the solid work… really nice idea.

In my opinion, the 2005 Champions League Final between Milan and Liverpool, when Liverpool went into half-time three goals down tops the Man Utd effort for true grit and determination to go down as one of the greatest football matches ever!

Were you actually trading that match back in the day?

    Thank-you.

      Hi Zak,

You are right about the Liverpool match being more spectacular but in 1999 no one knew what the future held so at the time it was the most amazing finish to a champions league match 😉

I was not trading the Liverpool match. In those days I was quite on and off and still finding my feet. I am sure that AC Milan touched 1.01 at half time though.
